Bastrop is one of the oldest towns in Texas. It was first settled in 1804 and officially established in 1832 by Stephen F. Austin. He named the city after one of his good friends and co-workers, the Baron de Bastrop. Beforehand, it served as a vital crossing point of the Colorado River on the Old San Antonio Road, El Camino Real de los Tejas. Before the first Spanish explorers crossed the territory, the area around Bastrop was occupied by the Tonkawa and other Southwestern Indians.
